A total of eight studies examined the use of sildenafil (Viagra) for erectile dysfunction. Of these eight, four found that sildenafil was effective for treating erectile dysfunction and the other two showed no benefit.
Researchers from The University of Nottingham in the UK and the University of Manchester in the UK conducted a series of eight clinical trials to assess the effect of sildenafil on sexual desire in men with erectile dysfunction.
Researchers analysed data from the clinical trials and conducted an open label, multicenter, randomized, parallel-group, fixed-dose, controlled, placebo-controlled, double-blind, double-masked, single-centre trial, involving 699 men with erectile dysfunction.
The clinical trials included 697 men with erectile dysfunction. The men were randomly assigned to receive sildenafil (25 mg) or placebo for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks, patients were asked to rate their desire for sex and how often they felt they wanted to have sex.
The sildenafil group had significantly higher levels of sexual desire than the placebo group, with a mean decrease of 3.3 times in a month compared to 3.2 times in the placebo group. Both groups also had significantly greater improvements in sexual function (improvement in International Index of Erectile Function and Sexual desire domain scores) and overall satisfaction with treatment (sex satisfaction domain scores).
